Digitizing motorsport vehicles with the CADPen
Application: Capturing chassis geometry for research and development on racing motorcycles

For the development of new dampers for racing motorcycles, precise initial data is required, such as wheelbase, steering head angle, and swing arm length. With the CADPen, these features can be digitized directly on the vehicle.
Optical markers are attached to the motorcycle so that the stereo cameras can be flexibly positioned around the vehicle. Subsequently, a sketch plane aligned with the vehicle axis is defined. All captured distances and angles are recorded and exported as a single DXF file.
Additional 3D geometries and other sketch planes can be added to capture further spatial features. With the CADPen – also in combination with the extended tip – even deeper points such as axle centers or hard-to-reach frame nodes can be easily probed.
The exported DXF file contains all relevant lengths and angles required for a chassis or kinematic simulation. This provides a solid foundation for the development and optimization of new dampers in motorsport.
